June marks the 25th anniversary of our favorite hedgehog dude with attitude- None other than Sonic the Hedgehog.
25 years ago, Sonic launched his self titled debut on the Sega Genesis and since then has created a legacy that’s hard even for non gamers to ignore.
We’ve just seen E3 pass by and fans are, needless to say, a little disappointed not to have heard any news for this year’s festivities. This is especially discerning considering Sega’s latest iteration, Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, that all but nearly washed up and put itself out.
While there have been no reports of a celebration for Sega’s mascot here in the US, many eagerly await for the 25th of this month(starting to get the theme they’re pushing here?) where an event will be held at the Tokyo Joypolis Theme Park in Minato, Japan. It seems the major focus will be on merchandise.
When I think back on my memories of Sonic, what comes to mind are vibrantly colored pixels that blur in the background as I watch and move Sonic through each zone, with his music and sound effects bringing each moment closer to my reality.
And that’s just from the beginning of Sonic’s legacy, whose road to success wasn’t always paved with gold rings. But if there’s anything to take from all these years of running and spinning, I believe it’s that life will take you through a series of ups and downs. And when things get tough, you’ll be sure to find a new perspective if you pick up some speed and catch that loop de loop~
Until next time, here’s a video of 32 floppy drives playing the theme of Green Hill Zone for your viewing pleasure.
